Northern Lights Exteriors is a design–build deck builder working in Lyons since 2001. Foothills lots bring slope, rock and drainage into the conversation before anyone picks a board color — footings, beam sizing and where water goes underneath are the real engineering. In a wildland-urban interface we also specify Class A fire-rated boards, ember-resistant detailing and non-combustible framing where it matters. We build with Trex, TimberTech and Deckorators composite as well as hardwood. Backed by a 5-year installation warranty.

Your Price, Decided With You — Not a Surprise Quoted Price Later

The worst part of most deck projects is the gap. You spend an hour describing what you want, someone measures, everyone leaves — and days later a number lands that you either swallow or argue with. If it comes in high, you start over. We took the gap out.

① Watch the price move while you decide

On the first visit we walk your foundation, structure, decking and finish options together on software we built ourselves. Change the framing, change the boards, change the railing — the price updates in front of you, in real time. You are not waiting days to find out what your decisions cost.

② Build to your number, in the same sitting

Tell us what you want to spend and we work toward it while we are standing on the site with you, instead of mailing a proposal that misses by twenty percent and starting again. Every option is priced as you consider it, so the budget conversation happens with you rather than to you.

③ Find out what you can actually live without

When every change is priced the moment you make it, the trade-offs get obvious fast. Most people end up cutting one thing they were sure they wanted, and protecting one thing they had not realized mattered to them. That only happens when you can see it.

④ This is our own technology

Not a catalog and not an off-the-shelf calculator. We built it because deck pricing genuinely is complicated — footings, framing, spans, rail systems and finishes all move the number differently — and we would rather show you why than ask you to trust a lump sum. You leave the first appointment with the scope of work in hand.

⑤ And no, this is not a high-pressure close

Worth saying plainly, because real-time pricing on a first appointment is exactly what high-pressure home-improvement sales looks like — so the suspicion is fair. We are not doing that. Nobody is going to sit in your kitchen for ninety minutes waiting for a signature, and there is no discount that expires when we walk out the door. This is education: what the options are, what each one costs, and which ones are genuinely worth it on your build. You end up with a project moving at a price you understood from the start — and you decide on your own time.

We Confirm the Code Before We Design — Not After

Wildland-urban interface rules are not uniform, and this is where a lot of Lyons deck projects go wrong. Plenty of foothills jurisdictions still permit wood framing — sometimes standard pressure-treated, sometimes fire-retardant treated (FRT) lumber, sometimes only in particular assemblies or locations on the structure. Others require non-combustible framing outright. It varies by jurisdiction, by whether your parcel sits in a mapped WUI zone, and by how the deck attaches to the house.

So before we put a design in front of you, we confirm what actually applies to your address. That does two things:

  • Your project does not stall in permitting. A design drawn against the wrong assumption gets kicked back, and you lose weeks in the middle of building season.
  • You are not sold something you love and then told the structure has to change. Framing is not a detail you swap late — changing it after you have committed to a design can move the cost significantly. We would rather have that conversation before you fall in love with a drawing than after.

We recommend non-combustible steel or aluminum framing on most Lyons WUI projects because it performs best in an ember event, and we will show you exactly why. But we recommend it because it suits your site and your code — not because it is the only thing we build.

Ember-Resistant Under-Deck Mesh: the Component Most Lyons Decks Are Missing

A Class A rated deck board is the headline, and on its own it is not enough. In a wildfire, homes are rarely lost to a wall of flame — they are lost to embers, which travel well ahead of the fire and land looking for somewhere to settle. On a deck, the place they settle is underneath it.

Embers drift through the gaps between deck boards, drop into the space below, and land on whatever is there — framing, leaf litter, stored patio furniture, firewood. That fire then burns upward into the deck and into the wall of the house. It is one of the most common ways a home is lost during a conflagration, and a Class A board sitting above it does not prevent it.

What we specify

  • 1/8″ non-combustible stainless steel mesh at every under-deck opening — the aperture matters, because a coarser screen simply passes embers through.
  • Stainless, not standard hardware cloth. Galvanised hardware cloth corrodes and fails at exactly the joints you are relying on, and it is the cheap substitute we see most often on decks built by others.
  • Continuous screening at rim, stair openings and any skirting gap — a mesh barrier with a gap in it is not a barrier.
  • Keeping the area under the deck clear — the best screening in the world does not help if what is under the deck is a woodpile.

Combined with non-combustible steel or aluminum framing, ignition-resistant railing and proper metal flashing, the mesh is what turns a Class A board into a Class A assembly. Ask any Lyons deck builder you are considering what mesh they specify and at what aperture. If they treat it as an afterthought, that tells you something.

Class A Fire-Rated Decks in Lyons — the Most Ignition-Prone Part of the House

In a wildland-urban interface the deck is often the weakest link. It is combustible, it is attached to the wall, and the space underneath collects exactly the dry debris that embers are looking for. Lyons sits in that interface — the 2024 Stone Canyon Fire burned the hillsides above town — so deck specification here is a fire decision as much as a lifestyle one.

  • Class A fire-rated composite boards where the line offers them — ratings vary by product and board, so we verify rather than assume.
  • Non-combustible framing — steel or aluminum substructure removes the fuel underneath entirely.
  • Ember-resistant detailing — screened under-deck areas, metal flashing, and non-combustible borders where the deck meets siding.
  • Keep the under-deck clear — the cheapest fire mitigation on any property is not storing firewood and dry material under the deck.
