Who are the best deck installation companies in Northglenn, CO?

Northern Lights Exteriors has built on Colorado’s Front Range since 2001 and holds a Class C general contractor license — so a deck, the pergola over it and the roofline it ties into can run under one contract with one project manager.

We build in composite and PVC only — Trex, TimberTech and Deckorators — and we build full decks and full replacements, not repairs. We also build pergolas, louvered adjustable pergolas, patio covers and covered porches, which on a west-facing Northglenn yard is usually what the space actually needs.

Every structure is permitted with the correct authority, engineered for open-plains wind uplift, and documented in a proprietary client portal. Rated 4.9 out of 5 from 552 verified reviews.

Your Price, Decided With You — Not a Surprise Quoted Price Later

The worst part of most deck projects is the gap. You spend an hour describing what you want, someone measures, everyone leaves — and days later a number lands that you either swallow or argue with. If it comes in high, you start over. We took the gap out.

① Watch the price move while you decide

On the first visit we walk your foundation, structure, decking and finish options together on software we built ourselves. Change the framing, change the boards, change the railing — the price updates in front of you, in real time. You are not waiting days to find out what your decisions cost.

② Build to your number, in the same sitting

Tell us what you want to spend and we work toward it while we are standing on the site with you, instead of mailing a proposal that misses by twenty percent and starting again. Every option is priced as you consider it, so the budget conversation happens with you rather than to you.

③ Find out what you can actually live without

When every change is priced the moment you make it, the trade-offs get obvious fast. Most people end up cutting one thing they were sure they wanted, and protecting one thing they had not realized mattered to them. That only happens when you can see it.

④ This is our own technology

Not a catalog and not an off-the-shelf calculator. We built it because deck pricing genuinely is complicated — footings, framing, spans, rail systems and finishes all move the number differently — and we would rather show you why than ask you to trust a lump sum. You leave the first appointment with the scope of work in hand.

⑤ And no, this is not a high-pressure close

Worth saying plainly, because real-time pricing on a first appointment is exactly what high-pressure home-improvement sales looks like — so the suspicion is fair. We are not doing that. Nobody is going to sit in your kitchen for ninety minutes waiting for a signature, and there is no discount that expires when we walk out the door. This is education: what the options are, what each one costs, and which ones are genuinely worth it on your build. You end up with a project moving at a price you understood from the start — and you decide on your own time.

Building Outdoor Living on a Northglenn Lot

A Northglenn back yard is a specific design problem, and it is not the one most deck content is written about. Perl-Mack platted these subdivisions for volume between 1959 and the 1970s — efficient lots, houses set close to a consistent build line, mature trees now, and back yards that are genuinely usable but finite. Nobody here is building a 900-square-foot multi-level deck, and nobody should be.

What works on these lots is the opposite of maximal: a deck sized to the way the door actually opens, positioned around the shade you already have, and detailed so the useful season runs longer than three months. Three constraints show up on nearly every Northglenn property we walk.

The walk-out height problem

Ranches here typically sit low, so the back door is often one or two steps above grade. That is ideal — it means a low deck or a ground-level platform with no railing requirement and no visual wall between the house and the yard. Tri-levels are the opposite: the back door is frequently a half-level up, which means a real elevated structure, a code-compliant guard, and stairs that have to land somewhere sensible.

Afternoon sun with nothing to stop it

West-facing back yards on the plains at 5,400 feet get punishing late-day sun and UV. A west-facing deck without overhead structure is a surface you look at rather than one you sit on between about two and seven in the evening, all summer.

Wind off the open plains

Northglenn sits with open ground to the north and east. Downslope and frontal winds are real here, and they are why an overhead structure has to be engineered and anchored rather than assembled from a big-box kit. We have taken down more than one failed kit pergola to replace it with something attached properly.

The practical consequence is that on many Northglenn homes the right answer is not “bigger deck.” It is a correctly sized deck plus overhead structure — which is where pergolas and patio covers come in, and which is what most of this city is actually searching for.

Pergolas and Patio Covers in Northglenn

Searches for pergolas in Northglenn outnumber almost every other outdoor-living question this city asks, and they get the worst answers of any of them. A pergola is not one product — it is four different structures that people call by the same word, and picking the wrong one is how you end up with shade you cannot use in July or a structure that leaks onto your furniture.

StructureWhat it actually doesBest on a Northglenn lot when
Open pergolaSlatted overhead members cast moving, partial shade. It defines the space and cuts glare but does not stop rain, and at midday the sun comes straight through the gaps. You want definition and dappled light rather than full shade — typically over a patio or a seating zone on a north or east elevation.
Louvered / adjustable pergolaPivoting louvers you close for shade or rain and open for sun. It is the answer to a west-facing Colorado yard, because the same structure works in April and in July.Your back yard faces west or south-west and the late-day sun is the actual reason the space goes unused. Most expensive option, and usually the correct one here.
Solid patio coverA roofed structure. Full shade, sheds rain and hail, and keeps furniture usable and dry.You want a genuine outdoor room, or you are covering a back door and want the entry protected. Also the right call if the deck surface is under a tree that drops.
Covered porchA roof structure integrated into the house roofline rather than attached beneath it.You are already re-roofing, or the existing roofline can absorb it. The most permanent and best-looking result — and the most involved to build.

All four are structures, not furniture, and in Northglenn all four are permitted work attached to your house. Anchoring is the part that gets skipped: a freestanding kit set on pavers is a sail waiting for the right wind, and an attached structure has to be ledgered and flashed into the wall exactly as carefully as a deck ledger — done badly, it is a water entry point directly above your back door.

Details on each: pergolas, patio covers, and covered porches.

Composite and PVC Decking — and Why We Stopped Building in Wood

We build in composite and PVC only — Trex, TimberTech and Deckorators. We do not build wood decks, and that is a deliberate scope decision rather than a supply problem, so it is worth saying why plainly.

A wood deck in this climate is a maintenance contract you did not know you signed. At 5,400 feet, with this UV load and this freeze–thaw cycling, softwood decking grays within a season or two, then checks, cups and splinters. It wants cleaning and re-sealing every year or two to stay respectable, and the fastener holes work loose as the boards move. Most of the failed decks we tear out in Adams County are wood decks whose owners did everything they were told to do. We would rather build something that does not need that from you.

LineConstructionSuits
TrexWood-plastic composite with a capped shell on three or four sides. The most widely recognized brand, with the deepest color range. Most Northglenn projects. Good performance-to-cost balance and easy to match later.
TimberTechBoth capped composite and full PVC lines. PVC has no wood flour in it at all, so it is the lightest and stays coolest underfoot — which matters on a west-facing surface in a Colorado August.West and south-west exposures, and anyone who has been burned (literally) by a dark composite surface.
DeckoratorsMineral-based composite. Notably dimensionally stable and rated for wet applications.Ground-level and low platforms where drainage and movement are the concerns.

A straight answer on cost: composite costs more up front than wood, meaningfully. Over a fifteen-year horizon in this climate it generally does not, once you count sealing, sanding, board replacement and the weekends. Compare the lines on our composite decking page, see Trex specifically, or our deck builder overview if you are collecting bids.

One more scope note, stated up front rather than after you call: we build full decks and full replacements, not repairs. We do not re-board an existing frame. On a structure whose framing is the same age as its decking, replacing only the visible surface leaves you standing on the part nobody inspected.

The System Behind the Work

A deck or a pergola attaches to your house at a ledger, and that connection is simultaneously the structure’s load path and a hole in your weather barrier. It is the single detail that decides whether you have an outdoor room or a slow leak above your back door — and it is completely invisible within a day of being built.

Two things make that possible, and they are the reason to choose us over a cheaper quote.

First, experience and scope. We have been working on Colorado’s Front Range since 2001, and we hold a Class C general contractor license (Colorado license #C120350) rather than a single-trade license. That is not a technicality: it means roofing, siding, windows, decks and outdoor living can run under one contract, with one project manager accountable for the flashings where those trades meet — which is precisely where multi-contractor projects leak, literally and figuratively. James Hardie has recognized us as an Elite Preferred contractor continuously since 2011, and as a President’s Club member — their highest contractor distinction nationwide. Our rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 552 verified reviews. Alongside that license we hold manufacturer certifications from James Hardie (Elite Preferred since 2011), GAF (Master Elite), Pella, TimberTech and Deckorators, and we have been named a Qualified Remodeler Top 500 contractor three years running — all of it listed, with the issuing body for each, on our awards and credentials page.

Second, a proprietary on-demand client portal we built ourselves. Most of what people hate about a remodel is not the construction. It is not knowing — who to call, whether the permit went in, when material arrives, what has been paid, whether it passed inspection. We built a system to remove exactly that, and as far as we know no other exterior contractor in this market offers it:

Every conversation in one place

Messages, decisions and change requests are logged against your project rather than scattered across texts, voicemails and three different crew members’ phones.

Contracts and scope, always retrievable

Your signed contract and itemized scope live in the portal, so “what did we actually agree to?” is a thing you look up rather than a thing you argue about.

Permit status you can see

Where the permit is in the process, and when inspections are scheduled — without having to phone anyone to find out.

Delivery and install schedules

When material lands and when each trade starts, so you can plan around the work instead of waiting for a truck to appear.

Before, during and final photography

Documented condition before we start, progress images through production, and final photography — including the parts of the building you will never see again once it is closed up.

Payments tracked per trade

What is paid and what is outstanding, broken out by trade rather than as one running balance you have to reconcile yourself.

Inspection records

Each inspection and its result, recorded against the project and available when you sell the house and someone asks.

Access is an individual, custom URL issued to you — and you get it when we start talking, at the lead and project meeting, not after you sign something. That is deliberate: you can see how we run a project before you commit to one. It then stays available after the work is finished, which matters more than it sounds, because the documentation, images and inspection records are exactly what a buyer’s agent, an appraiser or an insurer asks for years later.

Northglenn Decks & Pergolas — Frequently Asked Questions

What do deck installation companies in Northglenn charge?

Most Northglenn composite decks land in the five figures, driven far more by structure than by surface area — a low ground-level platform off a ranch back door is a fundamentally cheaper build than an elevated tri-level deck that needs a code-compliant guard, stairs and deeper footings. Decking line matters too, with PVC generally above capped composite. We measure, then give you a firm written figure.

Do you build wood decks?

No. We build in composite and PVC only — Trex, TimberTech and Deckorators. It is a deliberate scope decision: at this altitude, with this UV and this freeze–thaw cycling, a wood deck grays, checks and splinters within a couple of seasons and needs re-sealing every year or two to stay respectable. We are happy to compare composite against wood honestly on cost, because over fifteen years the comparison is not close.

Do I need a permit for a pergola or patio cover in Northglenn?

For a structure attached to the house, yes — this is permitted structural work, pulled with the City of Northglenn. Watch out if your mailing address reads Thornton, which many Northglenn parcels do for historical reasons; filing with the wrong jurisdiction costs weeks. We confirm the authority for your parcel and file it ourselves.

Which is better for a west-facing Northglenn yard, a pergola or a patio cover?

If the late-afternoon sun is the reason you do not use the space, an open slatted pergola will disappoint you — low western sun comes in under it and straight through the gaps. The two structures that genuinely fix a west-facing Colorado yard are a louvered adjustable pergola, which you close in July and open in April, or a solid patio cover, which gives you full shade and sheds hail as a bonus.

Can you build a pergola over my existing concrete patio?

Usually yes, and it is often the best-value outdoor living project on a Northglenn lot — the slab is already there and already flat. The two things we check are whether the existing slab and its footings can carry post loads, and how the structure ties into the house. On the plains with open ground to the north, wind uplift is a real design load, so anchoring is engineered rather than assumed.

Will you replace the boards on my existing deck frame?

No — we build full decks and full replacements, not re-boards. If the decking has reached the end of its life, the framing beneath it is the same age and has been under the same weather. Replacing only what you can see means keeping the part that carries the load and that nobody has inspected. We will tell you honestly at the walk-through if your frame is genuinely sound, and if it is, a re-board is a reasonable thing to hire someone else for.

How long does a Northglenn deck or pergola take to build?

Once permitted and with material on hand, a straightforward ground-level composite deck is typically several days to about a week on site. Elevated structures, louvered pergolas and solid patio covers run longer. The permit is usually the least predictable part of the timeline, which is why its status sits in your portal rather than requiring a phone call.
