Why WUI-Compliant Decking Matters in Colorado
In major wildfire events, wind-driven embers can travel miles ahead of the main fire front. Those embers often collect on and under decks, in corners, and against siding—igniting homes long before flames arrive. Traditional wood decks are especially vulnerable.
If you live in a Wildland–Urban Interface (WUI) area or in a mapped wildfire risk zone in Boulder County, Jefferson County, Larimer County, or surrounding regions, your deck may need to be upgraded or replaced to meet current ignition-resistant and WUI code requirements.
Signs You May Need a Fire-Rated Deck Upgrade
- Your existing deck is built with traditional wood boards and lumber framing.
- You live in the foothills, near a canyon, or in a heavily forested neighborhood.
- Your county, city, or HOA references WUI, ignition-resistant, or wildfire codes.
- You’re planning exterior upgrades (siding, roofing, windows) and want a cohesive mitigation plan.
We specialize in building code-compliant, wildfire-conscious decks that balance safety, aesthetics, and long-term durability—so you don’t have to choose between a great outdoor space and peace of mind.

We Confirm the Code Before We Design — Not After
Wildland-urban interface rules are not uniform, and this is where a lot of Colorado deck projects go wrong. Plenty of foothills jurisdictions still permit wood framing — sometimes standard pressure-treated, sometimes fire-retardant treated (FRT) lumber, sometimes only in particular assemblies or locations on the structure. Others require non-combustible framing outright. It varies by jurisdiction, by whether your parcel sits in a mapped WUI zone, and by how the deck attaches to the house.
So before we put a design in front of you, we confirm what actually applies to your address. That does two things:
- Your project does not stall in permitting. A design drawn against the wrong assumption gets kicked back, and you lose weeks in the middle of building season.
- You are not sold something you love and then told the structure has to change. Framing is not a detail you swap late — changing it after you have committed to a design can move the cost significantly. We would rather have that conversation before you fall in love with a drawing than after.
We recommend non-combustible steel or aluminum framing on most Colorado WUI projects because it performs best in an ember event, and we will show you exactly why. But we recommend it because it suits your site and your code — not because it is the only thing we build.
Ember-Resistant Under-Deck Mesh: the Component Most Colorado Decks Are Missing
A Class A rated deck board is the headline, and on its own it is not enough. In a wildfire, homes are rarely lost to a wall of flame — they are lost to embers, which travel well ahead of the fire and land looking for somewhere to settle. On a deck, the place they settle is underneath it.
Embers drift through the gaps between deck boards, drop into the space below, and land on whatever is there — framing, leaf litter, stored patio furniture, firewood. That fire then burns upward into the deck and into the wall of the house. It is one of the most common ways a home is lost during a conflagration, and a Class A board sitting above it does not prevent it.
What we specify
- 1/8″ non-combustible stainless steel mesh at every under-deck opening — the aperture matters, because a coarser screen simply passes embers through.
- Stainless, not standard hardware cloth. Galvanised hardware cloth corrodes and fails at exactly the joints you are relying on, and it is the cheap substitute we see most often on decks built by others.
- Continuous screening at rim, stair openings and any skirting gap — a mesh barrier with a gap in it is not a barrier.
- Keeping the area under the deck clear — the best screening in the world does not help if what is under the deck is a woodpile.
Combined with non-combustible steel or aluminum framing, ignition-resistant railing and proper metal flashing, the mesh is what turns a Class A board into a Class A assembly. Ask any Colorado deck builder you are considering what mesh they specify and at what aperture. If they treat it as an afterthought, that tells you something.
WUI & Fire-Rated Decking FAQs
What is the best deck material for wildfire-prone areas?
The most effective approach for wildfire-prone areas is a Class A fire-rated decking system, typically composite or PVC boards installed over non-combustible or ignition-resistant framing such as steel. This significantly reduces ignition risk compared to traditional wood decks.
Do I need a fire-rated deck if I live in Boulder County or Larimer County?
Many foothill and forest-edge neighborhoods in Boulder County, Larimer County, and Jefferson County fall under WUI or ignition-resistant construction regulations. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and project type, and we help ensure your new deck is designed to meet or exceed the codes that apply to your address. If your home is in Boulder County, our Boulder fire-resistant WUI deck page goes through that jurisdiction’s requirements in detail.
Can I keep my existing wood deck if I am in a WUI zone?
Most wood decks are far more vulnerable to ember ignition and flame spread. While specific rules depend on your local authority, replacement with fire-rated composite or PVC materials and improved framing and under-deck details is often strongly recommended and may be required during major renovations or rebuilds.
Is steel framing required for WUI decks?
Steel framing is not required in every jurisdiction, but it is considered a best practice for wildfire resilience and long-term performance. Steel is non-combustible, does not rot or warp, and provides a robust structure for Class A decking systems.
Does upgrading to a Class A fire-rated deck help with insurance or resale value?
Upgrading to a WUI-compliant, Class A fire-rated deck can improve buyer confidence, support conversations with your insurance provider about wildfire mitigation, and may help position your home more favorably in high-risk markets.
Why are you the best WUI deck builder near me?
We combine local Colorado experience, deep knowledge of WUI and ignition-resistant codes, and premium Class A materials like Trex Transcend Lineage, TimberTech Advanced PVC, Deckorators MBC, and steel framing. As a full-service exterior remodeler, we understand how your deck ties into siding, roofing, windows, and defensible-space planning—so your project isn’t just beautiful, it’s thoughtfully engineered for wildfire risk and long-term performance.
