Sliding Patio Door Replacement & Installation in Colorado
A patio door is mostly glass, and it is usually the single largest source of heat loss on that wall. Replacing it well is an energy decision as much as a comfort one.
Quick Answer: Who Replaces Sliding Patio Doors in Colorado?
Northern Lights Exteriors replaces and installs sliding patio doors across the Colorado Front Range and into the foothills. We offer sliding patio doors from Andersen, Pella, Marvin and Anlin — the same manufacturers whose windows we install, so a patio door and the windows around it can be ordered as one matched package with the same frames, finishes and glass. We have worked on Colorado exteriors since 2001 and are a Pella Certified Contractor. Most patio doors go in alongside a window project, but we will quote a door-only replacement.

How Sliding Patio Doors Actually Fail

Almost nobody replaces a patio door because the glass broke. They replace it for one of four reasons, and knowing which one you have decides whether you need a door or an adjustment.
It got heavy. Sliding panels ride on rollers in a track. Grit works into the track, the rollers flat-spot, and a door that used to move with one finger now takes a shoulder. On a door that is otherwise sound, this is sometimes a roller and track job rather than a replacement — worth checking before you spend.
The seal failed. Fogging or haze between the panes means the insulated glass unit has lost its seal. At Front Range altitude the pressure differential across a sealed unit is greater than at sea level, which is hard on edge seals over time. The glass can sometimes be replaced without the whole door, depending on how the unit is built.
It leaks air. Stand beside an older slider on a windy January evening and you will feel it. Weatherstripping compresses permanently, the interlock between panels wears, and a single-pane or early double-pane unit simply has no thermal performance to begin with.
The opening moved. Expansive soils shift houses, and a patio door is a wide, unforgiving opening. If the header sagged or the sill settled, the door binds — and a new door dropped into that same opening will bind too. We look at the opening before we quote the door.
The Sliding Doors We Install
We offer sliding patio doors from Andersen, Pella, Marvin and Anlin. Those are the same four manufacturers behind the replacement windows we install, and that is the practical argument for buying them together: one order, one delivery, one crew, and frames, finishes and glass packages that genuinely match rather than nearly match.
We are brand-agnostic on purpose. Which of the four suits your project depends on the opening size, the exposure, whether you want a wood interior, and what the rest of the elevation looks like — not on which line we would rather sell. We are a Pella Certified Contractor, and we will still put an Andersen or a Marvin in front of you when it is the better fit.
This page covers sliding patio doors specifically. If you are considering a hinged or French configuration instead, ask — it is a different product and we would rather talk it through than have you assume either way.
The Energy Case, Honestly
A patio door is typically the largest single expanse of glass in the room, so it drives that room’s comfort more than any window does. Replacing every window on a wall and leaving a failing slider in the middle of them is the most common way people end up disappointed with a window project — the draft they were trying to fix is still there, coming from the biggest opening.
Specification matters more here than on a small window. Low-E coatings tuned for a south- or west-facing Colorado exposure, warm-edge spacers, and gas fill all do more work on a door-sized unit than they do on a bathroom window. So does the frame: a thermally broken or composite frame keeps the edge of the glass warmer, which is where condensation shows up first on a cold morning.
Colorado utilities also run rebate programs on qualifying glazing. Our window rebate page covers what is currently available and the deadlines that apply.
Why the Install Decides the Outcome
A patio door is heavy, wide and full of glass, which makes it the least forgiving opening in the house. Three things decide whether it still slides easily in ten years.
The sill has to be dead level and fully supported. Any dip and the frame twists, the panels stop meeting the interlock evenly, and the door drags at one end of its travel. On a wide opening this is measured, shimmed and re-checked, not eyeballed.
The sill pan is not optional. Wind-driven rain and melting snow both push water at the threshold of a patio door harder than at any window. A pan under the sill routes that water back out; without one it finds the floor framing and does its damage out of sight.
The head needs to carry the load. Wide openings sag over time if the header was undersized or has settled. If we find that, we will tell you before the door is ordered rather than after it will not close.
Patio Doors in Wildfire (WUI) Areas
If your address is in a mapped WUI area under the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code, the glass is regulated. Exterior windows, window walls and glazed doors must be tempered glass, multilayered glazed panels, glass block, or carry a fire protection rating of not less than 20 minutes. A patio door is glazed door by definition, so it falls squarely inside that rule. Single-pane annealed glass meets none of the four options.
A modern double- or triple-pane unit with tempered glass clears the bar comfortably — the specification simply has to be written correctly for your class and jurisdiction, which we confirm before the door is ordered.
Frequently Asked
How much does it cost to replace a sliding glass door in Colorado?
It depends on the opening size, the manufacturer, the glass package and whether the frame and header are sound — a straight swap into a good opening and a wide door that needs structural work are different projects. We do not publish a figure we would then have to walk back; we measure the opening, look at what is behind it, and price the actual job.
Can I replace just the glass instead of the whole door?
Sometimes. If the frame and the rollers are sound and the only problem is a fogged or failed sealed unit, the glass can often be replaced on its own depending on how the door is built. If the frame is leaking air, the panels are dragging, or the opening has moved, glass alone will not fix it. We will tell you which one you have.
Should I replace the patio door at the same time as my windows?
Usually yes, and it is the cheapest it will ever be to do. The door is the largest glass opening on that wall and the biggest single source of heat loss, so replacing the windows around it and leaving it in place tends to disappoint. Ordering together also gets matching frames, finishes and glass, one delivery and one crew.
What brands of sliding patio door do you install?
Andersen, Pella, Marvin and Anlin — the same manufacturers whose windows we install, which is why a patio door and the windows around it can be ordered as one matched package. We are a Pella Certified Contractor and still specify whichever of the four fits the opening and the exposure best.
My slider is hard to open. Do I need a new door?
Not necessarily. Hard-sliding is usually rollers and a dirty or damaged track, which on an otherwise sound door can be serviced rather than replaced. It becomes a replacement when the frame is out of square, the seals have failed, or the door has no thermal performance worth keeping. It is worth having someone look before you buy a door.
Do you install French or hinged patio doors?
This page covers sliding patio doors, which is the bulk of what we do. If you want a hinged or French configuration, ask us — it is a different product and we would rather have that conversation directly than have you assume one way or the other.
Replacing a Patio Door?
Tell us the opening and which way it faces. If the door is the problem we will show you options from all four manufacturers. If it is the rollers or the header, we will tell you that instead.
