Why Fiber Cement Fits a Golden Home

James Hardie fiber cement is noncombustible: it won’t ignite when exposed to direct flame and doesn’t add fuel to a fire. On parcels in the higher-hazard areas of the city’s wildfire map, the Golden Wildfire Resiliency Code (Ordinance 2290, Chapter 15.80 of the Golden Municipal Code), which the city began enforcing on June 10, 2026, limits exterior walls to noncombustible, ignition-resistant or fire-retardant-treated materials, and fiber cement meets that. (More in our Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code guide and on fire-resistant James Hardie siding.) Where the code doesn’t apply, the same board is simply a harder, longer-lived wall than the late-1970s wood siding it usually replaces in Golden Southwest and Beverly Heights.

It also handles the rest of Golden’s weather: the HZ5 formulation is engineered for freeze–thaw, hail and the dry, high-altitude sun.

James Hardie Colors We’ve Installed in Golden

Color is the decision most Golden homeowners spend the longest on, so here is what we’ve actually put on Golden houses, and why each combination worked:

Siding / trimWhereWhy it works
Slate Gray with Iron Gray trimApple MeadowsA mid-tone gray that reads crisp against the red rock of the mesas. The darker trim outlines the windows without the contrast of white.
Timber Bark with Cobble Stone trimGolden 80403A warm brown that settles into a hillside setting. It is the choice when you want the house to blend in rather than stand out.
Arctic White with Light Mist accentsSixth Avenue WestClean and traditional. It suits the older, more formal homes closer to downtown.
Iron GrayGolden, with replacement windowsDark and modern. It pairs well with black window frames and stone.
WoodTone Mountain CedarLakota HillsThe look of stained cedar without restaining, on a house that backs onto open hillside.
WoodTone River RockGolden 80403A weathered, gray-brown wood look for owners who want wood character in a quieter tone.

Every James Hardie color we install is ColorPlus, a finish baked on at the factory rather than painted on site. That matters in Golden because the sun at this altitude is hard on field paint, and a factory finish holds its color much longer.

Two pieces of advice from doing this for years. First, look at samples outside, against your roof and stone, not on a screen; foothills light makes colors read lighter and cooler than you expect. Second, choose trim deliberately. The trim color changes the look of the house as much as the siding does. We bring samples to the estimate, and the full range is on our James Hardie colors and styles page.

Choosing a James Hardie Profile

Golden’s homes run from nineteenth-century houses downtown to 1990s two-stories at the Village at Mountain Ridge, and the right profile depends on the house rather than the catalog.

  • Lap siding suits most Golden ranches and two-stories, smooth or in the Cedarmill woodgrain texture.
  • Board and batten adds vertical lines to gables and suits the contemporary mountain look.
  • WoodTone gives the look of stained wood without the restaining.
  • Artisan is a thicker board with deeper shadow lines, for higher-end homes where the detailing matters.

If your home is in one of the historic districts, we settle profile and color early so they can go into the Historic Preservation Board review.

Stone Canyon Fire Survivor: A James Hardie Home in Lyons

This house is not in Golden. It is in Lyons, and it is here because of what it came through. We re-sided it in James Hardie fiber cement, Pearl Gray lap siding with board and batten. Then the Stone Canyon Fire came down the hillside toward it.

When it was over, the hillside around the house had burned and the house was still standing. Fiber cement wasn’t the only reason. The closed soffits, metal flashing and clearances around it mattered too, and those are the same details we build into every Golden install.

What an Elite Preferred Install Looks Like

We have been a James Hardie Elite Preferred contractor continuously since 2011 and are a President’s Club member. The parts of that installation standard that matter most on a Golden house are the ones you can’t see once the job is finished:

  • Clearances above roofs, decks and grade, so the board isn’t sitting in snow.
  • Flashing at every penetration, including the roof-to-wall junction, where the western wind drives water hardest.
  • Fastening for wind. Golden builds to a 150 mph ultimate design wind, Exposure C, and the National Weather Service recorded a 67 mph gust on Lookout Mountain, just southwest of town, in December 2025.
  • Vents and soffits. Open eave and gable vents are where embers get into a wall system, so we close those gaps as part of the job.

What Drives the Cost of Hardie in Golden

We give firm, measured, written figures rather than per-square-foot guesses. What moves the number on a Golden house:

FactorWhy it matters here
Tear-off and what’s under itOriginal 1950s–1980s wood siding often hides sheathing damage at window sills and the base of walls. We price the likely repair up front.
Slope and accessLots on Lookout Mountain’s lower slopes and around the mesas need more staging than a flat lot.
Profile and colorLap siding is the baseline. Board and batten, shingle accents, WoodTone and Artisan cost more.
Vents and eavesUpgrading soffit and gable vents where the wildfire map calls for it.

Ask about financing when we measure. The broader Golden siding page compares fiber cement against engineered wood if you are still deciding on material.

The System Behind the Work

Fiber cement is a 30-plus-year decision, and what makes it valuable later is proof: the product line, color, installer designation and warranty registration. That proof is what a buyer, an appraiser or an insurance underwriter in a wildfire-mapped area will ask for.

Two things make that possible, and they are the reason to choose us over a cheaper quote.

First, experience and scope. We have been working on Colorado’s Front Range since 2001, and we hold a Class C general contractor license (Colorado license #C120350) rather than a single-trade license. That is not a technicality: it means roofing, siding, windows, decks and outdoor living can run under one contract, with one project manager accountable for the flashings where those trades meet — which is precisely where multi-contractor projects leak, literally and figuratively. James Hardie has recognized us as an Elite Preferred contractor continuously since 2011, and as a President’s Club member — their highest contractor distinction nationwide. Our rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 552 verified reviews.

Second, a proprietary on-demand client portal we built ourselves. Most of what people hate about a remodel is not the construction. It is not knowing — who to call, whether the permit went in, when material arrives, what has been paid, whether it passed inspection. We built a system to remove exactly that, and as far as we know no other exterior contractor in this market offers it:

Every conversation in one place

Messages, decisions and change requests are logged against your project rather than scattered across texts, voicemails and three different crew members’ phones.

Contracts and scope, always retrievable

Your signed contract and itemized scope live in the portal, so “what did we actually agree to?” is a thing you look up rather than a thing you argue about.

Permit status you can see

Where the permit is in the process, and when inspections are scheduled — without having to phone anyone to find out.

Delivery and install schedules

When material lands and when each trade starts, so you can plan around the work instead of waiting for a truck to appear.

Before, during and final photography

Documented condition before we start, progress images through production, and final photography — including the parts of the building you will never see again once it is closed up.

Payments tracked per trade

What is paid and what is outstanding, broken out by trade rather than as one running balance you have to reconcile yourself.

Inspection records

Each inspection and its result, recorded against the project and available when you sell the house and someone asks.

Access is an individual, custom URL issued to you — and you get it when we start talking, at the lead and project meeting, not after you sign something. That is deliberate: you can see how we run a project before you commit to one. It then stays available after the work is finished, which matters more than it sounds, because the documentation, images and inspection records are exactly what a buyer’s agent, an appraiser or an insurer asks for years later.

James Hardie Siding in Golden — FAQs

What James Hardie colors look best on a Golden home?

In Golden we’ve installed Slate Gray with Iron Gray trim, Timber Bark with Cobble Stone trim, Arctic White with Light Mist accents, Iron Gray, and WoodTone Mountain Cedar and River Rock. Earth tones blend into a hillside setting, and darker grays read modern against the mesas. We bring ColorPlus samples to the estimate so you can see them in Golden’s light.

Does Golden’s wildfire code require fiber cement siding?

Not specifically. Codes like Golden’s limit exterior walls in the higher-hazard mapped areas to noncombustible, ignition-resistant or fire-retardant-treated materials, and fiber cement meets that as a noncombustible option. Whether the requirement applies at all depends on where your parcel sits on the city’s map, so we check it first.

Who installs James Hardie siding in Golden, CO?

Northern Lights Exteriors has been a James Hardie Elite Preferred contractor since 2011 and is a President’s Club member, which is James Hardie’s highest contractor distinction. We install throughout Golden, including the historic districts, Beverly Heights, Golden Southwest and the Village at Mountain Ridge.

How much does James Hardie siding cost in Golden?

It depends on wall area, tear-off and repair, slope and access, profile and finish, and vent work. We measure and give a firm written figure rather than a per-square-foot guess, and financing is available.

Can I put James Hardie on a house in a Golden historic district?

Often, yes, but most exterior alterations in the 12th Street, 8th & 9th Street and East Street districts need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Board first. We plan the profile and trim to suit the review.
